Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities, or dental caries.

Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental hygiene and may be a sign of other health problems. Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Every 2 to 3 months. The American Dental Association recommends throwing out your toothbrush every three to four months. If the bristles become frayed, throw it out even more often. If you use an electric toothbrush, throw out the head as often as you’d discard a disposable toothbrush.
The specifics of your teeth cleaning depend on your oral health needs. Before your teeth cleaning starts, your dental professional examines your teeth and gums to look for signs of cavities and gum disease. Then, they use a special tool to remove plaque and tartar from your gum line and between your teeth. Your dental professional polishes your teeth with a gritty toothpaste and electric toothbrush and finishes your teeth cleaning with professional flossing to remove any remaining debris.
Your dentist determines how frequently you need teeth cleaning based on your oral health needs. In most cases, they recommend teeth cleaning every six months to control tartar buildup and maintain good oral hygiene. You may require more frequent teeth cleaning if you have a history of gum disease, take medication that makes your mouth dry, or you have diabetes. Smokers also benefit from more frequent teeth cleaning.
A deep teeth cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, removes plaque and tartar that’s migrated below your gum line. You may need a deep cleaning if you wait too long to schedule your regular teeth cleaning. When you don’t remove tartar and plaque regularly, they fall and collect under your gum line, trapping bacteria that may cause gum disease, gum tissue loss, and bone loss.
