Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

A procedure that treats the inside of the infected tooth, relieves pain and saves your natural tooth. It is done when the tooth decay has penetrated the dental pulp and damaged its structure . In this case, the tooth does not have a natural defence ability, so it dies under the long-term influence of the toxins. It becomes fragile, more prone to breaking. At Smile On Dental Clinic LLC, we perform root canal treatments with utmost precision to save the damaged tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Modern root canal treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth .You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment.

Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages:
  • Efficient chewing
  • Normal biting force and sensation
  • Natural appearance
  • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain

Endodontic treatment helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last as long as other natural teeth and often for a lifetime.

A root canal involves the following steps:

  • The tooth is numbered and
  • Decay is removed and an opening is established to the interior of the tooth.
  • The pulp (nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth) is cleaned
  • The empty canal is filled with material called Gutta Percha (a filler which does not react with the body).
  • A temporary filling is placed in the tooth until it is prepared for a dental crown.

You may need a root canal if you feel any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Tooth pain is very sharp and intense, or dull and constant, or constantly
  • Tooth is very sensitive on hot or cold stimulus
  • Severe pain when biting on the tooth
  • Tooth pain gets worse when lying down
  • Tooth pain occurs spontaneously
  • Pain medications do not relieve the pain
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum area near the symptomatic tooth
  • You notice a dental abscess (or pimple) forming on the gum next to the affected This pimple may pop and drain a white, bad tasting pus.
If you are able to eat on the side of the mouth that did not have Root Canal Treatment, you can have a fairly normal diet.Definitely avoid chewing on the tooth that had the Root Canal Treatment, because until the tooth gets a permanent filling and crown, the tooth is fragile and can break.

There is not sufficient tooth structure to support a filling so the tooth could easily fracture. Also, the seal of a temporary filling is not adequate after two weeks and a conventional filling will also be ineffective in preventing contamination of the tooth over long periods of time. Our dentist will recommend either a core build up or a post and core build up depending on the amount of remaining healthy tooth – this is to hold the crown. After the core or post and core, the tooth is prepared for a crown.
